Flowers: Flowers in cymes, racemes, spikes, or heads. Flowers bisexual (perfect) or staminate. Calyx 5–10-lobed, usually persistent. Corolla salverform or funnelform, 4–8-lobed, without scales in the throat. Stamens as many as corolla lobes. Ovary superior, 4-celled; ovules 1 per cell, sometimes fewer by abortion; style terminal; stigma 4-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; unlobed; ovoid to ellipsoid; exocarp fleshy or dry. Seeds 1–4.
